“I have been away from international cricket for quite some time now, and that distance will not be bridged. My chapter in international cricket is over.
I have been contemplating this decision for a long time. With a major tournament like the Champions Trophy ahead, I do not want discussions about me to disrupt the team's focus. I never wanted that before, either. That’s why I voluntarily withdrew myself from the BCB’s central contract a long time ago.
Although there have been reports in the media suggesting that I kept the matter unresolved, the truth is I stepped away from any form of contract over a year ago. Someone who is not part of any plans or contracts shouldn’t even be a topic of discussion. Despite this, unnecessary debates continued.
The decision to retire or continue playing is the right of every cricketer or professional athlete. I gave myself time to think, and now I feel the time has come.
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto genuinely wanted me to return, and I also had discussions with the selection committee. I am grateful to them for still considering me fit for the team. However, I have listened to my heart.
What happened before the 2023 World Cup was a big shock for me because I was not excluded for cricketing reasons. Even so, wherever I went, cricket fans expressed their desire to see me back in the national team. I have thought about their love and support.
At home, I also have a little fan. My son never said it directly to me but often told his mother that he wanted to see his father play for the country again.
To the fans, I am sorry for disappointing you. To my son, I say, ‘One day, when you grow up, you will understand your father.”
