Ravichandran Ashwin registered his sixth Test hundred and Ravindra Jadeja struck a half-century to rejuvenate India in the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai as they scored 339-6  at stumps on Day 1.

Hasan Mahmud claimed a four-fer, and in reply Jadeja and Ashwin piled up an unbeaten 195-run stand to lead India's strong fightback after getting slipped to 144-6.

The day's play took a swift turn after the second session when Ashwin and Jadeja took charge of the game. Ashwin scored 102 off 112 which featured 10 boundaries and two sixes while Jadeja remained not out at 86 at the close of the day, waiting for the century milestone.

Earlier, the hosts were stunned when Hasan took back-to-back wickets to dismantle the top order, taking Rohit Sharma, Shubhman Gill and Virat Kohli during the first session.

Hasan finished with a figure of four wickets conceding 58 runs with four maidens in 18 overs.

He made an early blow to remove captain Rohit Sharma (6) when he edged a good length delivery from Hasan and handed it to the second slip to Najmul Hossain Shanto.

The right-arm pacer had Shubhman Gill for nought and Virat Kohli in the successive overs. Gill nicked and was caught behind while Virat Kohli (6) got grounded in the same way leaving the hosts in a precarious position.

Dominating the first session the Tigers took control of the second session as well when they took three more important wickets in quick succession.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishab Pant tried to rebuild in the middle, having slumped to 34-3. The duo put together a 62-run partnership for the fourth wickets until Hasan gave the breakthrough, dismissing Pant on 39 runs.

While the young pacer Nahid Rana was hurling thunderbolts at Jaiswal, who ended up getting an edge after completing his half-century.

He scored 56 facing 118 balls featuring nine boundaries. Spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz then took down KL Rahul for 16.
