Playing in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) will be beneficial for banned former Australian skipper Steven Smith as the Cricket Australia (CA) is set to assess his performance considering the upcoming World Cup.

By the time when the World Cup starts, the one year ban on Smith and his teammate David Warner will be lifted which is why the duo’s performance will be something to watch, insisted Salahduddin, the coach of Comilla Victorians, a team in which Smith will be playing.

Warner who will be the part of Sylhet Sixers has already been appointed as the captain of the team.

Salahuddin however admitted it is something special to get the player like Smith who is only second to legendary Don Bradman in terms of batting average in Test cricket.

“To get a player like Smith in the team is a blessing. At the same time it is also beneficial for him because he is trying to prepare him for the International cricket,” Salahuddin said on Wednesday at the Academy premises during his side’s practice session.

“If he plays good cricket, we will be benefited hugely. But I am excited with all the players I got, no for just one. But obviously he is special.”

Following the ball tampering scandal in Captown Test, Cricket Australia banned Smith and Warner for one year after uncovering a web of lies told by the players after they were caught. Opening batsman Cameron Bancroft was banned for nine months following the scandal, which has outraged the fans, jolted the sponsors and prompted CA to send the players home from South Africa.

While Warner will never be considered for leadership role, Smith and Bancrft will have to wait two years to be considered for this role.

However CA chief executive Kevin Roberts recently revealed that the board will have a keen eye on the tournaments like BPL, IPL and PSL as Smith and Warner will be playing here.

“Since their board will have an eye on this tournament, Smith will try to prove him. So it’s a good news for us,” said Salahuddin.
