Batting, fielding made us suffer: Mashrafe

Bangladesh ODI captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza identified shortage of runs and sloppy catching as the reasons behind their defeat in the second ODI against West Indies at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Tuesday (December 11).
Bangladesh’s hope to seal the three-match ODI series with a match to go came to an abrupt end as West Indies opener Shai Hope played one of the best innings in the one-day cricket history to script his side’s four-wicket victory on Tuesday at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
Hope smashed an epic 144-ball 146 not out to help West Indies knock off the target with two balls to spare after Bangladesh put up 255 for seven.

Hope single-handedly thwarted Bangladesh to keep the side’s hopes alive in the series when the hosts threatened to take away the match by exposing West Indies’ lower order with West Indies at 185 for six. But the man from Barbados shared an unbeaten 71 off 64 with Keemo Paul for the seventh wicket, in which Paul contributed only 18.
“There should have been 15-20 more runs. If Tamim and Shakib continued batting, we could have gone near 300. If Riyad and Shakib could batted together for six or seven more overs, the total would be 270-280, which would benefit our bowlers,” Mashrafe told reporters after the match.
“After Tamim and Mushfiq got out, we felt that 270-80 would be a good total. We were on the right track. It’s unusual if you look at our recent performances. We have had a century or two centuries or innings of 80-90 runs at our disposal. The batsmen couldn’t implement what they tried to do. We have to minimize the mistakes in the next game,” said Mashrafe adding that it was disappointing to see such horrible catching by his fielders.
“We have definitely suffered because of the fielding. Paul’s catch was missed twice, otherwise Kemar Roach would come to bat and it would be difficult for them to rotate the strike.
“There’s no compromise on fielding practice. But, at the end of the day, confidence matters in the field. Sometimes you drop one catch and then miss easy catches because of uneasiness. We have missed a lot of catches in two matches but we want to take the positive things into the next match.”
