Mashrafe hints at post-World Cup retirement

Bangladesh ODI captain Mashrafe Mortaza can sense his career approaching the end as he has described his political participation as some sort of a retirement plan.
Mashrafe called an impromptu press conference on Tuesday (December 3) to clear the air after remaining silent since taking the decision to contest in the upcoming parliamentary election from Narail-2 constituency under Awami League banner.
According to Mashrafe, he has joined politics as he is seeing the end of his cricketing career and wants to do something for the people.
“My personal goal was to play the World Cup and only time can say whether a review will be required,” said the Bangladesh skipper.
“Until playing at the Champions Trophy I wasn’t sure if I would be able to continue after that. Still I moved forward as my fitness and performance was backing me. So I am saying my mind is set up to play until the World Cup and there is a chance to have a review, but if I am not in that stage I will have to quit.
“If I am able to play after the World Cup than I will try to continue but anything can happen even before that. 50 percent of the people [media] present here believed that my career is over after the 2011 World Cup but by the grace of Allah I carried it further for another seven years. All my family members were apprehensive whether I can carry it or not. Now my career is coming to an end.
“I am not Sachin Tendulkar or Glenn Macgrath that people will remember me after my cricket is over. I tried to play cricket my way and carry it through all the struggle of my life. I want to do something for the people ahead and that is why I’ve joined politics.”
