Former Pakistan cricketer responds to fixing claims

Former Pakistan international Hasan Raza, who holds the record being the youngest men’s cricketer to debut in Tests when he represented Pakistan at the age of 14, has spoken about allegations that link him with match-fixing for the first time since Al Jazeera’s revelations about fixers in the sport.

Raza said that he is innocent and that his name is “unnecessarily being dragged into this controversy” by the media. He admitted that he was indeed alongside Robin Morris in the videos that were published but he maintained that he had no involvement in any of the fixing allegations.

"I do agree having met Robin Morris but I met him to engage some players for the T-20 league matches. There was no role of my in engaging the discussions on fixing the match or the pitch,” he said.

He added that during their conversation, a foreigner came to the place and he also insisted that he was not in Sri Lanka to meet players. Furthermore, he added that since he is a cricketer, it is only natural to be in contact with international stars of the community, something that doesn’t prove that he is guilty.

"During our conversation, a foreigner had joined. Our meeting took place in UAE and I had not gone to Sri lanka to meet any players there,” he claimed.

"Being a cricketer, I am in contact with so many international cricketers and that does not prove my role in fixing the matches".

Raza believes that all of this is being done to tarnish his good image and provide a hindrance in his path to represent the UAE national team.

"I am holding world's youngest Test cricketer record and these allegations are spoiling my image,” the cricketer continued.

"I stayed in UAE for three years and had I stayed there for six more months, would have been eligible for the UAE national team.  "There is certainly some bad elements want my image be tarnished,” he stated.

He concluded by confirming that he would be hiring a lawyer if need be to prove his innocence.
