Graeme Swann states his opinion on The Hundred

Former England off-spinner Graeme Swann took a dig at the reasoning behind the inception of the newest format of the game: The Hundred. Swann was, in particular, critical of ECB chairman Colin Graves for his comment on young people not liking the sport.

Swann, however, believes that the real motive behind The Hundred is to fit the TV schedules. He also asked Colin Graves to come to his cricket club where there are at least 150 kids watching cricket from the ground every week.

"It will be exactly the same as T20 cricket if they get the world's best players in it," Swann said on ESPNcricinfo's Talking T20 podcast. "There's the thing that Colin Graves is barking on about: 'It's because kids don't like cricket.' They do, Colin. Turn up at my cricket club where I take my son on a Friday night - there's 150 kids every week.

"[Hundred-ball cricket] is being done very blatantly to fit the TV [schedules], since there is only a small window to get the game on, so they've tried to squeeze it in."

Swann once against reiterated that the TV is the main reason for the creation of The Hundred as it provides the broadcasters with small time slots. He was, however, fumed with Colin Graves’ explanation as it insults the intelligence of the people – which is the reason for the uproar, he thinks.

"It's because of the TV rights," Swann said. "We need to get participation and need to get it on TV, so they are ready to given them small time slots, like they do for football games. So they want to squeeze it in to 100 balls [for these reasons]. But then to insult people's intelligence by claiming that it's something else? That's why there's uproar at the moment."

The first tournament of The Hundred will take place in 2020 and will be organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board. It will consist of eight teams.
