Be afraid everyone, England are looking for the heart

Let the trumpets blare. And let the drum roll. And let the hairs on the spine stand. Because England are here – and they are going to come for the heart first.

England are a different kind of a lion. While the norm for normal lions is to grab their prey by the neck, England directly try to rip the heart out of their kill. And in most cases, they successfully do that.

While eviscerating their prey, this English team stares right at the dying eyes of their target and through their soul. There is still a bit of life left and they not only try to ensure that it is a long and painful death, they also need to see the shifting emotions in the eyes of their kill.

Fear, sadness, acceptance… the emotional catharsis of the opponent happens right in front of them as England prevail like the kings of the jungle that they are.

It was only a few hours ago when India A posted the second highest List A score of all time with a mammoth 458 runs against Leicester. A little later, England overtook it by ease as they scored 481 for 6 in their 50 overs against world champions Australia.

It was a match where they showed no mercy towards the ball or the Australian bowlers. At one point, it felt as though they would easily breach the barrier of 500 runs, but it didn’t happen due to a poor final five overs for the English.

Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow started the onslaught as they put up 159 runs on the board before the former was run out for 82 – it was the only way that the pair could be broken.

Fear.

Bairstow continued the merciless slaughtering and had a more dangerous butcher with him this time: Alex Hales. Bairstow finished with 139 runs while Hales smashed 147 runs.

Eoin Morgan gave them the necessary acceleration by scoring 67 from 30 balls as England finished with 481 runs from their allotted 50 overs.

The tale of Australian bowling is a sorry one and it is better to leave it untouched because there are no remains that could be touched. They not only had their hearts ripped out and bones churned to powder, their soul was also consumed.

Sadness.

D’Arcy Short and Travis Head opened the innings for Australia and while they did get starts – every Australian batsmen did – none could play an innings like that of Bairstow or Hales or Roy. None.

After 27.3 overs, Australia had put up 194 runs at the loss of 7 wickets. It was over.

Acceptance.

10 overs later, the misery ended as Australia – who won the World Cup in 2015 – finished with 239 runs on board and lost by a mammoth 242 runs. It was their biggest defeat ever and further plunges them into a crisis as it is apparent that without Steve Smith and David Warner, this team is like a minnow.

Scores:

England – 481/6 (50 overs)

Alex Hales – 147 (92) | Jhye Richardson 10-1-92-3

Australia – 239/10 (37 overs)

Travis Head – 51 (39) | Adil Rashid 10-0-47-4

England win by 242 runs.
