The Bangladesh Premier League could be postponed to 2019 due to the general elections that will take place later this year. As a result, it could be difficult to provide necessary security to the players during that period.

Haider Mallick, member secretary of BPL’s governing council echoed the same thought while also adding the league could take place in January next year should security concerns remain.

"Just before the election, it would be tough to provide security to the seven teams in three venues. If we don't get sufficient security, we will have to hold the tournament after the elections. We can arrange it in January," Mallick told Prothom Alo.

Some of the team owners of the BPL will be involved in the elections as the heads of Khulna Titans, Comilla Victorians and Sylhet Sixers are Members of Parliament or ministers under the current regime.

Mallick, however, believes that the first and foremost concern of the owners is the safety of the players and added that a final decision will be taken within a week while affirming that chances of a delay are high.

"Some of the franchise owners will be involved in the election, but we are more focused on the security. If we cannot provide every team with enough police or security forces, it becomes hard for us. I think we will take a decision in a week, but there's likelihood of a delay."

The last edition of the BPL began in November and ended in December. This time, with delay looking like a high possibility, it could affect Bangladesh’s cricketing calendar as they are scheduled to play Zimbabwe in January next year.
