Bangladesh bowlers made an impactful start on the second day of the first Test against the West Indies in Antigua on Saturday, with pacer Hasan Mahmud leading the charge with two early wickets.
Despite the early blows, the hosts recovered through lower-order resistance, ending the first session at 336 for seven in their first innings.
Starting the day at 250 for five, West Indies quickly found themselves on the defensive as Hasan trapped wicketkeeper-batter Joshua Da Silva (13) leg-before in the very first over. In his next over, Hasan struck again, dismissing Alzarri Joseph (four) with the help of a stunning diving catch at gully by Zakir Hasan, reducing the hosts to 261 for seven.
Hasan's first breakthrough of the day brought his tally of Test wickets in 2024 to 24, surpassing Shahadat Hossain's record of 23 wickets in a calendar year for a Bangladeshi pacer, set in 2008.
Bowling with the second new ball, Hasan nearly claimed a third wicket in quick succession when he had Kemar Roach trapped in front. However, a review overturned the initial out decision.
Overnight batter Justin Greaves, playing his third Test, reached his maiden Test fifty and remained unbeaten on 63. Kemar Roach provided steady support at the other end with 19 not out, helping the West Indies rebuild after the early setbacks.
