Mehedi Hasan Miraj, a star in making

Mehedi Hasan Miraj, a star in making

Recent successes of Team Tigers in ODIs have been so impressive in last few years but when it comes to the test Bangladesh are not treated as a bigger side. Lack of chances for playing test matches is one of the main reasons for this failure in the test arena. If Bangladesh get proper chances of playing regular test cricket they can be very good at that arena too and that has been proved in the last test match of Bangladesh against England in Chittagong. Tigers fought really well in that match and they almost had the victory. In that match Bangladesh made a bold move of playing 3 debutants with Shafiul Islam who came back from a massive injury. But that decision of playing 3 debutants worked brilliantly for Bangladesh. Out of 3 debutants, an 18 year old boy amazed the world with his magic of bowling. Mighty England side was astonished to see the quality of bowling from that young man. Do you know his name? He is Mehedi Hasan Miraj who was the former captain of Bangladesh u-19 cricket team. He took Bangladesh u-19 team to the semifinal for the first time in history with his extra ordinary all-round performance. But that was not enough to get a chance in the national team. Miraj had to play first class cricket after that to prove his worth again. Coming from a small family playing an expensive game like cricket was not really easy for him. He had to struggle a lot but his dreams made the struggles easy for him. After the U-19 worldcup people of Bangladesh were eager to see Miraj in the national side soon but Miraj was patient. In 2016, Mehedi became the man-of-the-tournament in the 2016 U-19 World Cup and his captaincy was more than extra ordinary. Mehedi scored 242 runs and took 12 wickets from six games in the tournament. For two years he played at the U-19 level where he first captained Bangladesh to the 2014 World Cup in UAE and then in 2016 when the country hosted it. He made his first-class debut in the 2014-15 season of the National Cricket League but it was the next season that he stole the limelight by bagging 30 wickets at an average of 16.43. He also had three five-fors in the tourney. He knew the chance would come and so Miraj kept on practicing and trying hard. Atlast on 20th October his dream of playing for the tigers in international arena became true. Three lions who were really unaware of Miraj, selected to bat first after winning the toss in the first test. Normally early in the first session of a test match, you don’t often see spinners bowling the second over. But exactly same thing was decided by skipper Mushfiqur Rahim and He gave the bowl to debutant Miraj. Bowling in the 2nd over of a test match against the Mighty English side was not really easy for a debutant. Specially, the new ball was not turning that much but Miraj was patient. He was continuously bowling in good line and length and didn’t try to experiment special things. He got the reward very soon. It was the 10th over of the innings and England were 18 for no loss while Ben Duckett tried to lift Hasan over the top in the fifth ball of the over. But the delivery spun sharply and hit his middle and off stump. Miraj burst into extreme joy as he had got his first ever test wicket for his country. Miraj didn’t stop there as he took the wicket of Gary Balance with the help of DRS. England went to the lunch by losing 3 wickets and Mehedi Hasan Miraj had already impressed the world. Mehedi then got the wicket of Joe Root who is the most delightful batsman in the English side right now. The excellent story of his bowling was not finished there as he took the wickets of dangerous looking Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow. Miraj thus became the youngest Bangladeshi to take five wickets in his maiden Test and seventh overall in the world. He finished with a figure of 6/80 as he took another wicket which was of Stuart Broad’s. Failure in batting did not help Miraj to prove his all-round ability but His bowling made his debut match memorable. He finished with impressive match figures of 7/138 and even drew praises from the critics for his performance. His ability to make full use of the new ball and continuing the same with the old one was noticeable alongside his on-field attitude. With the kind of performance shown in the first test, the world cricket now will eagerly wait to see more from this young guy. Bangladesh have got another gem in their side and they should take proper care of them.
