“My participation? Who said I am not playing?” shot back India skipper Virat Kohli, while reacting to reports in a section of media that he may be rested for the forthcoming five-match ODI series, and a T20 international against Sri Lanka, which begins with the first game on August 20 at Dambulla.
When he was informed that there were rumours to this effect, Kohli quipped: “I don’t know where this came from… if you don’t want me to play, then tell me, I have no problems in playing!” leaving the media in splits.
While Kohli has cleared the air by denying he will sit out of this ODI series, one player who may get an ODI recall, when the selectors pick the squad on Sunday, is batsman Suresh Raina.
On Friday, the left-hander tweeted his pictures with his close friend and former Indian captain MS Dhoni at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore, where both have been undergoing a fitness regime.
The out-of-favour India batsman returned to the NCA on Thursday after a two-month training stint in Amsterdam, where was with his wife Priyanka and daughter Garcia.
Raina hasn’t played ODIs for India since October 2015. In the last T20I that he played, the explosive left-hander had smashed 63 off 45 balls to fashion India’s 75-run triumph over England in February this year.
“Raina’s an impact player, who can help us win games with his big-hitting down the order. Since we have a heavy limited overs schedule later this season, we need to play him now. He could be a key player for us in the 2019 World Cup,” said a source. TNN
