Bangladesh and their Story of becoming the Sixth team in ODI

Cricket is like a religion in Bangladesh and the people living here always remain tensed and excited for their players who have been working very hard to touch the sky and to put the name of their country on the top of the board.

Recently, Tigers have reached to the 6th place in ICC ODI rankings after beating New Zealand in the last match of the Tri-nation series. Head coach, Chandika Hathurusingha has been showing his glimpse from the very beginning of his contract and captain like, Mashrafe has been inspiring the players all the time for this kind of achievement.

However, Hathurusingha may be getting the results but the process and the hard-work were started a long ago. The players of Bangladesh Cricket team have been dreaming for this kind of situation for a long while.

It is more surprising that, the best all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan has been thinking of this type of achievement from the 2007 World Cup. Recently, He said to Prothom Alo, “As far as I remember I told the reporters during 2007 World Cup that we would be the 5th or 6th team of the world within 10 years.”

Shakib added, “Tamim, Mushfiq and I always thought about this. So, there is nothing to be surprised.”

Bangladesh are currently in London for the Champions Trophy and they will play the first match of the tournament on 1st June against the home team, England. It will be an emotional one for all the Bangladeshi people as Tigers will be up for the challenges in Champions Trophy after 11 long years on that day.

It was not an easy journey. The senior players of current Bangladesh team, Mashrafe, Shakib, Mushfiq, Tamim and Mahmudullah watched the last two seasons of the Champions Trophy on television as Bangladesh were way behind the top 8 teams and other than the top 8 teams no team is allowed to play in Champions Trophy.

The rule was imposed by International Cricket Council (ICC) after the 2006 Champions Trophy. But, Bangladesh is the sixth team of the world now and they are playing in this year.

However, those senior guys from Bangladesh have witnessed all the hard-works and all the sacrifices. Meanwhile, the contribution of young bloods like Mosaddek Hossain, Soumya Sarkar, Mehedi Hasan Miraz, Mustafizur Rahman or Sabbir Rahman shouldn’t be overlooked.

Those young guys came into the scene after the bad periods of Bangladesh team and so their mentality is different from Mashrafe or Shakib. So, moving up to the 6th place is not such a big news for them as their dreams are bigger.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh will play their 2nd warm-up match against India which will be started within few minutes. After losing the first match against Pakistan they are taking this match much seriously.

Moreover, the newborn rivalry among the fan base of these two countries has added something extra to this warm-up game. But, this match is not so big for the Tigers as they are changed side now.

They take the warm-up as warm-up and they know how to switch the mood into serious games. For this change, Hathurusingha should get huge credit. Even after losing the last match from a very close position, Bangladesh team was relaxed.

Apart from these practice matches, Bangladesh team have a tough schedule ahead of them where they will face England, Australia and New Zealand. Those matches will be so important for them to keep their ranking intact. Moreover, they are eager to show their worth to the world and they are getting huge opportunities for that.
