Melbourne Renegades got the worst news possible as their star import Dwayne Bravo has been ruled out from BBL with the West Indian needing surgery after badly injuring his hamstring during Thursday night’s Big Bash League loss to Perth Scorchers.
The Renegades will now turn their attention to finding a replacement player but it’s unclear how Bravo’s injury will impact on selection for the New Year’s Day derby against Melbourne Stars at the MCG.
Bravo was injured while trying to save a boundary against the Scorchers and got his left foot caught in the Etihad Stadium turf. He tumbled to the ground and was in significant discomfort until he was taken from the arena on a stretcher.
Bravo said, “Unfortunately my Big Bash season is over which is very disappointing. I’ll now have surgery and the rehabilitation to get me fit and playing at my best again. I want to thank all the Renegades fans for their support for me and I hope to see them again next season.”
It’s the second season in a row that the Renegades have lost a star import early in their BBL campaign after Chris Gayle was dumped by the club after his controversial interview with a female television reporter last season.
Skipper of Renegades, Arron Finch said, “It’s a huge blow, he’s one of the best allrounders in the world. It’s an unbelievably damaging blow for us, but also for him because we know how much he loves coming out here.”
Renegades spinner Brad Hogg said it was now up to the remainder of the squad to step up to cover the allrounder’s loss. Hogg said, “I drove him home last night and he was more gutted about the loss.”
The veteran spinner added, “You never want to see players like that go down. If you see the footage, his ankle went below him and the surface was a bit uneven. At the end of the day, you do lose players throughout the tournament. We’ve lost James Pattinson for the first couple of games and that’s a big loss.”
Hogg lastly said, “And that’s where the other guys have got to step up and play their roles. If you’re going to win the Big Bash, you’re going to require all 18 of the squad.”
