It was another evening and another T20 match happening in Mirpur when Bangladesh saw a fantastic young pace bowler with thin body bowling in a fantastic fashion and took his first wicket of his international career with the help of umpire’s wrong decision.
Then days were gone by and that thin bowler, Mustafijur Rahman kept on amazing the world with his mysterious bowling till his injury. He’ll be back again with his tremendous bowling soon.
And then, 3rd December came and another T20 match was happening in Mirpur. It was a do or die game for Rajshahi Kings against Chittagong Vikings and cricket world saw another mysterious bowler from Bangladesh in that match who is actually a batsman.
Chittagong was favorite before the match with batsmen like Chris Gayle, Tamim Iqbal, Anamul Haque, Jahurul Islam, Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Nabi in their side. Chittagong decided to bat first and Rajshahi’s captain, Darren Sammy was thinking of taking the wickets of them quickly to win.
Then the magic happened when 5th over of the match came. A young guy with thin body came to bowl with fears in his eyes. His debut match in BPL started to become very bad when he was hit for back to back fours by Jahurul Islam. Bu then, Umpire Nadir Shah helped young Afif to make a comeback by announcing Jahurul out for LBW despite an inside edge.
Lucky Afif was really happy but then he started to show his worth as a bowler. Afif bowled the mighty Chris Gayle with a full length delivery and started to roar with huge manner. For a 17 years boy, taking the wicket of Chris Gayle is more than enough in a debut match of BPL but Afif was not satisfied.
Then, Afif Hossain took the wickets of Zakir Hasan who was caught brilliantly by a diving Sabbir Rahman. 3 wickets in a debut match of BPL for 17 year kid is extra ordinary effort but Afif couldn’t stop amazing the world.
He completed his five-for by taking the wickets of Saqlain Sajib and Imran Khan at the end. By this, he became the first Bangladeshi to pick up a five-wicket haul on T20 debut. At 17 years and 72 days, he also became the youngest bowler to pick up a five-wicket haul in T20s.
More Interesting thing is that Afif is mainly an opener who recently made three huge scores in Under-19 practice matches and is a big-hitter. He is the vice captain of U-19 team and recently legalized his bowling action after being suspected.
Afif is a boy from Khulna who was born in 1999 and a student of Bangladesh’s Premier Sports Institute (BKSP). Khulna is a very lucky place for Bangladesh cricket as it has produced so many great players like Shakib Al Hasan, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, Mehedi Hasan Miraj for Bangladesh cricket team.
Bangladesh u-19 cricket team have a busy schedule ahead of them. Afif will join them after BPL and world will definitely keep looking for him in cricket arena. You can watch his debut performance of BPL here:
