Bangladesh Premier League franchise Rangpur Riders official threatens to quit Bangladesh Premier League as they are not sure of availability of Shakib al Hasan in their dressing room.
Riders had signed Shakib earlier but that signing will not have any impact whatsoever as BPL governing council announced on Sunday they will seek go for new agreements for the next cycle of tournament.
BPL governing council arranged a press conference at the BCB premises after giving a 48-hour deadline to Saturday to dissolve the entire crisis surrounding the BPL that started after Shakib decided to join Riders from Dhaka Dynamites where he spent three seasons.
BCB announced they will go for renewal upon mutual understanding with the existing franchises. If any of the existing franchises decides to discontinue in the tournament, the BPL GC will seek new Expression of interest for those many teams.
BPL governing council member Mahbub Anam said that they don’t acknowledge the agreement between Shakib and Riders and added that they will have auction for the upcoming edition of BPL that will have a four-year cycle while the retention policy will come into effect from the second year of the cycle.
‘’We cannot acknowledge the agreement [between Shakib and Riders] as we don’t have any agreement with any franchise at the moment because if you don’t have any agreement with us [BCB] there is no point validating it from our part,’’ he said.
‘’With the conclusion of the 6th edition of BPL T20, which was held in 2019, the first cycle of the tournament is now considered complete, which also marks the expiry of the tenure of the franchisee agreements with the respective right holders,’’ he said. ’It’s not important whether we will do continue with BPL or not but it’s just not on we spent 10 to 15 crores BDT every year and they [BPL governing council] will come up with different ideas every year. If necessary we will not play because Bangladesh Cricket Board have lot of teams and let them play with them,’’ Riders CEO Istiak Sadek said in an annoying tone when he was asked whether they will continue with BPL after he was informed about the latest development
