In his first match outside of Pakistan since returning to competitive cricket after serving a five-year ban for spot-fixing in the 2010 Lord’s Test against England, Mohammad Amir recorded career-best figures of 4 for 30 in Twenty20 cricket. The effort, however, was not enough as Chittagong Vikings, the team Amir is representing, lost to Rangpur Riders by two wickets in the inaugural game of the 2015 Bangladesh Premier League at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Sunday (November 22). Defending 187, Chittagong started strongly as Amir accounted for Lendl Simmons and Soumya Sarkar off consecutive deliveries in the third over. He finished his first spell with returns of 2-1-5-2 before returning to bowl in the 15th over. By then, Rangpur were staring down the barrel, needing 91 in the final stretch with five wickets in hand. Misbah-ul-Haq and Thisara Perera brought the game back into the balance by hitting Amir thrice to the boundary and collecting 17 runs in that over. Amir returned in the 19th over with the equation reading 22 needed off 12 balls. He dismissed Perera and Misbah off back-to-back deliveries, with the Pakistan Test captain bowled by a yorker. He, however, could not keep a check on the run flow as Darren Sammy hit him for a four as he finished with figures of 4-1-30-4. Shafiul Islam failed to defend 14 runs in the final over, as Rangpur recovered from 23 for 4 to clinch a last-ball win in front of a enthusiastic crowd. Prior to this game, Amir had played nine first-class and T20 matches in Pakistan in the second leg of his career for 21 wickets. He told AFP recently that he saw the BPL as “the first step towards reviving my international career” as he eyes next year’s World T20 in India. Although he has refused to talk to the media in Bangladesh, Amir said before his departure from Pakistan that he was “really thankful to the team for choosing me and I will try my best to give them my 100%.” But his comeback remains controversial with Mohammad Hafeez among those refusing to team up with the tainted left-arm seamer at the Chittagong for the BPL. As Amir struggles to rebuild trust, the BPL faces a similar challenge after its 2013 edition was blighted by a scandal involving players and a team owner. Mohammad Ashraful, the former Bangladesh captain, New Zealander Lou Vincent and Sri Lankan Kaushal Lokuarachchi were handed lengthy bans. Shihab Jishan Chowdhury was also convicted of trying to fix the outcome of a match involving his Dhaka Gladiators team.
